NIGO: From Japan with Love

Last month I was invited to the press preview for NIGO: From Japan with Love at the Design Museum in South Kensington.

It was an incredibly well-curated exhibition. Much of it was very nostalgia-inducing for me personally - the vintage Americana, the references to 80s Tokyo (he’s a similar age to my mum, so similar references) - but also the designer/creative director’s influence on streetwear, hip-hop brought me back to growing up in New York. BAPE was HUGE at my school.

The most poignant part of the exhibition was the section towards the end focusing on his interest in traditional Japanese heritage crafts - ceramics in particular. Having just written my matcha book, his focus on ‘look backwards to look towards the future’ really resonated, as it’s very much a part of my practice, too.

The exhibition is on until the 4th of October, and I highly recommend you go if you haven’t already - it really stuck with me.
